Historical memory connects Circassians with their homeland, ancestors, family histories, and the experiences that shaped communities across the world.

War, displacement, and exile

The long Caucasian War and the mass displacement of Circassians in the nineteenth century transformed the population of the northwestern Caucasus. Large numbers were forced from their homeland, and new communities formed across the Ottoman Empire and, later, many other countries.

Why archives matter

Official documents, maps, photographs, letters, cemetery records, oral testimony, and family collections help reconstruct experiences that were often fragmented by displacement. Responsible archives preserve original context, identify sources, protect sensitive information, and distinguish evidence from interpretation.

Memory for future generations

Preservation is not limited to the past. Digitization, translation, education, and cooperation between researchers and families make historical materials accessible to younger generations and to communities separated by language and geography.
