Circassian Language and Culture

Circassian culture is a living system of language, memory, ethics, artistic expression, and community relationships carried across generations in the Caucasus and throughout the diaspora.

Circassian languages

The Circassian languages belong to the Northwest Caucasian language family. Adyghe and Kabardian preserve related literary traditions and many regional forms of speech. Teaching children and adults, producing books and digital resources, and creating spaces where the language is used naturally are central to its future.

Culture in practice

Music, dance, storytelling, cuisine, craftsmanship, ceremonies, and standards of hospitality remain important forms of cultural expression. They connect personal and family experience with a wider Circassian identity.

Preservation through participation

Cultural continuity depends on active participation: families speaking the language, young people learning and creating, teachers sharing knowledge, researchers preserving sources, and communities supporting cultural centers. ICCSA works to strengthen these connections across countries.
